Pallone Applauds FDA's Nutrition Standards Initiative

Statement

Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement in response to the announcement by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb that FDA will pursue a new Nutrition Innovation Strategy to reduce the burden of chronic disease through improved nutrition:

"I am pleased that FDA will consider a new Nutrition Innovation Strategy and commend the agency for highlighting the vital role nutrition plays in improving public health. As the sponsor of the Food Labeling Modernization Act since 2013, I have long advocated for enhanced food labeling requirements so consumers better understand what is in the food they eat and the health impacts of their choices. Modernizing health claims on food packaging and updating labeling for greater consumer transparency have been central provisions of my legislation, and I am glad FDA agrees that these efforts will empower consumers and lead to better health outcomes.

"As FDA begins considering how to advance proposals to modernize the agency's approach to nutrition, I will soon reintroduce the Food Labeling Modernization Act, which outlines specific ways we can make these nutrition goals a reality. I look forward to working with FDA to ensure the strategies outlined today are implemented as swiftly as possible."
